The collection consists of correspondence, office memoranda and printed material maintained by the regional director’s office in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Memphis-Jackson Joint Board began as an administrative support unit for the smaller locals within its Southern region. The records contain correspondence, grievances, financial records and audits, organizing materials, periodicals, newsletters, leaflets, photographs, membership lists, convention materials, constitutions, and bylaws.
American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 3 (Atlanta, Ga.) records
International Union of Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers, Local 191 of Rome, Georgia, originated the significant 1969 strike against GE that led to an eventual federal lawsuit. Its records, 1953-1997, include documentation covering the daily operations, communications, and organization of the union.
The records of the International Woodworkers of America, Local 5-51, 1951-1968, consists of minutes of membership, Executive Board and Grievance committee meetings along with information on contract negotiations, arbitration and the 1953 organizing drive at the General Electric plant in Louisville.
The S. J. Maroda scrapbook, dated 1 June 1954, is titled Labor in Transition. It contains a 21-page typescript, "Labor in Transition: General Electric Company vs. Unionism at Appliance Park, Ky.," and seven sections of mounted printed material, including newspaper clippings, handbills, and booklets, January-August 1953. The material documents competing efforts to organize workers at a new General Electic Company manufacturing plant.
