Scope and Contents of the Records

The Records, 1951-1974, of Local 3, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents, legal files and printed material. Included are minutes of Greater Atlanta Public Employees District Council 14, 1966-1967, 1972. The records illuminate the local's daily concern with group insurance policies, membership maintenance, pensions, organizing in greater Atlanta area (particularly DeKalb County), legislative interests and support of strikes by the United Steelworkers (1959), AFSCME Local in Birmingham (1960), United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (1968-1969), and the boycott of General Electric products by the Electrical Workers (1969-1970).

Historical Note

The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) was chartered by the AFL in 1936 and merged with the Government and Civic Employees Organizing committee in 1956.
