In 1951, Winpisinger, at age 26, became one of the youngest members of the IAM national field staff. Winpisinger would later serve as IAM president from 1977 until 1989. During his tenure as IAM president and as a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council, Winpisinger gained a reputation as an outspoken advocate of progressive ideals.
