Identifier: L1986-16

Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1946-1985, of Carpenters Local 225 (Atlanta, GA) contain correspondence, minutes, financial statements, legal papers, work rules, contracts, bylaws, and pamphlets. The primary correspondents for Local 225 are Recording Secretaries T.D. Harper (1946-1949) and J.V. Edmonson (1950-1985). Persons writing to Local 225 include politicians, UBC national officers, other UBC locals, the Georgia State Council of Carpenters, and locals of other craft unions. The issues discussed in the correspondence include journeyman credentials, membership eligibility, strike support for other locals, support for legislative initiatives, apprenticeship programs, jurisdictional decisions made by the UBC president, and the organization of labor in the area in general. The minutes of Local 225 (1959-1977), the Georgia State Council of Carpenters (1953-1965), and the North Georgia Building and Construction Trades Council (1959-1965) reveal the UBC's concern with managing its relationships with other craft unions (particularly the Lathers' Union), caring for members who were will ill or injured, responding to requests from charities, and disciplining members charged with working on non-union projects.
