Scope and Content of the Records

The records, 1901-1968 of Carpenters Local 396, Newport News, include those of Local 887, Hampton, which was incorporated into 396 at a time not specified in the records. The bulk of the Material consists of financial ledgers and minute books. The ledgers show dues payment by members with a large number of these members expelled for nonpayment of dues in 1947. The minute books describe the problems 396 and 887 had agreeing on their respective jurisdictions. Also described are difficulties with nonunion men and black laborers working in their areas with union men. Included in these records is a minute book from the Peninsular District of Virginia with which 396 and 887 were affiliated.

Historical Note

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America organized in 1881 as the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. Chartered by the AFL in 1887, the Brotherhood merged with the United Order of American Carpenters and Joiners in 1888 to become the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
