Stanton E. Smith papers
Scope and Contents of the Papers
The Stanton E. Smith Records, 1938-1973, are comprised primarily of correspondence and other documents relating to Smith's duties in the Tennessee Federation of Labor, Tennessee State Labor Council, Chattanooga Central Labor Union, and the Southern Labor School. In addition, there are numerous photographs of Smith and other Southern Labor School members and members of the Tennessee AFL-CIO Executive Committee plus newspapers, pamphlets and other printed material. Included in the collection is Smith's correspondence with political and union leaders such as Estes Kefauver, Frank Clement, William Green, Charles M. Houk, and James L. McDevitt. Information about various international unions, local Leagues for Political Education, the Tennessee League for Political Education, Tennessee Central Labor Unions, Tennessee COPE, and Tennessee Congressmen is contained in this collection.

Biography of Stanton E. Smith
Stanton E. Smith (Born August 29, 1905) became a member of the American Federation of Teachers in 1932 and served as president of Local 246 from 1932 through 1939. Smith served as vice-president of the AFT from 1937 to 1946, as Secretary-Treasurer of the Chattanooga Central Labor Union between 1941 and 1956. Smith joined the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in 1942 and served as ILGWU Southeastern Director between 1942 and 1945. Elected President of the Tennessee Federation of Labor in 1949, Smith served until 1956, when he became President of the Tennessee State Labor Council.

Stanton E. Smith (born 1905) was a labor leader in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He served as President of the Tennessee Federation of Labor and of the Tennessee State Labor Council. Smith's papers, 1938-1973, are comprised primarily of correspondence and other documents relating to his duties in those organizations, the Chattanooga Central Labor Union, and the Southern Labor School. The papers also include photographs and printed material.
