Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1943-1972, of Machinists Local 291 consist primarily of correspondence, financial documents and minutes that illuminate the routine operations of the local concerning inter-union affairs and relations with companies under contract. Included also are the records of the organizing activity of District Lodge 178, 1953-1969, and those of the routine operations of defunct Lodge 1677 (Anniston, Gadsden, Talladega, Ala.), 1961-1963. The records of Local 291 include correspondence, financial documents, legal documents, minutes (1956-1965), printed material, and company files on the U.S. Pipe and Foundry Co., Anniston Foundry, Alabama Pipe Company and the Union Foundry. The collection also contains records of the District Lodge 178 from 1953-1969 and the Local 1677 from 1961-1963. District Lodge 178 records include desk diaries, financial documents, and company files on the Newberry Manufacturing Company. Records relating to Local 1677 include correspondence, financial documents, and company files on the Newberry Manufacturing Company.

Historical Note

Originally founded in Atlanta in 1888 as a trade union for railroad machinists, today the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents workers in a large and diverse number of fields. Over the course of the 20th century the machinists moved from representing railroad workers to machinists and others working for airlines and the aerospace industry.

Local 291 represented machinists in Aniston, Alabama.
