Scope and Contents of the Collection

The William Suttles collection consists of 48 photographs, 1982, and phonograph record sleeves, undated. The color photographs depict the first Johnny Mercer exhibit mounted at Georgia State University Library and the opening day festivities and ribbon-cutting, attended by Ginger Mercer and others. The photos include duplicates. The record sleeves, primarily from 10-inch 78 RPM records of the 1930s-50s, represent a wide range of companies that issued recordings of popular music in the United States.

Biographical Note about William Suttles

Over a multi-decade career, Dr. William M. Suttles served as a faculty member, department chair, dean, executive vice president and provost, and finally interim president at Georgia State University (GSU), his undergraduate alma mater. In 1982, when Suttles was provost, GSU Special Collections received the personal papers of songwriter Johnny Mercer and opened an exhibit dedicated to Mercer in the University Library.
