Women political activists

Jeanne Taylor Cahill, civic activist and businesswoman, was born in Alma (Ware County), Georgia in 1932. The Cahill papers are comprised of subject files, personal papers and artifacts reflecting the political, and activist activities of Jeanne Cahill.

Joan Olcott King (born 1932 in New Jersey) came to Atlanta in 1954 to work for Delta Airlines as a flight attendant. She married and settled in the area, eventually becoming a social activist and serving on the board of Nuclear Watch South. Her papers, 1950-2009 [bulk 1980-2009], are comprised of correspondence, fact sheets, articles, letters and general information on the industry of nuclear power.

Through her activities in NOW, Judith Lightfoot Cormack became a significant figure in the women's movement in Georgia, and nationally. One folder contains materials photocopied from originals in the possession of Judith Lightfoot Cormack, and includes letters written by, to, or concerning Cormack, some meeting minutes, and newsclippings.

Laura J. Moriarty has been very active in community and civic affairs for several years. Her collection, circa 1978-1994 consists of materials relating to her involvement with various organizations, including the Abigails, the Democratic Party, the League of Women Voters, the Atlanta Regional Commission, the National Issues Forum and the National Commission on Social Security.

The Lee Ague Miller papers, 1960-1972, consist of political polling and campaign materials, newspaper clippings, legal documents, periodicals, and correspondence. These manuscript materials detail Lee Miller's leadership in the Republican Party (mostly in Georgia) during the 1960s and early 1970s.

The Leola Reis Papers, 1997-2013, undated, are composed of articles, marketing materials, and correspondence. Much of the material refers to Reis’ marketing position at Planned Parenthood of Georgia. Additional materials refer to Reis’ volunteer work with multiple organizations surrounding reproductive rights and sex education.

The Linda Ellis papers, 1993-2017, consist of correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, promotional materials, flyers, news clippings, t-shirts, financial records, pins, and artifacts. The bulk of the material comes from Ellis's work with the Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative. Linda Ellis is a psychotherapist and former executive director of the Health Initiative (formally the Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative).

Linda Hallenborg Kurtz was the founder and chair of the Georgia Women's Political Caucus (GWPC), an officer of the ERA GA, Inc., vice chair and member of the board of directors of the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) and director of governmental affairs for Planned Parenthood of the Atlanta Area. The Linda Hallenborg Kurtz Papers, 1979-1995, document her involvement with the Georgia Women's Political Caucus (GWPC) and the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC).

Nan Orrock has served as a senator and as a representative in Georgia's State Legislature since 1987, and as president of the Women Legislators' Lobby. She has worked to balance budgets; to increase spending on assisting families, education health and child care; and to reduce excessive and wasteful military spending. Her papers include correspondence, printed material, and financial records, that document legislation, political campaigns, and issues, 1969-2010 (bulk 1990-2006).

The Nancy N. Boothe papers, 1980-2009 [bulk 1990-1997], are composed of articles, notes, reports and a wide variety of feminist publications. Much of the material documents the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women, which Ms. Boothe attended as Executive Director of Atlanta's Feminist Women's Health Center. Artifacts, artwork and textiles relate to the conference and to other women's and health issues.

Refugee Women's Network is a national nonprofit organization created by women for women in 1995, that focuses on enhancing refugee and immigrant women's strengths, skills, and courage through leadership training, education and advocacy. Its records, 1989-2012, consist of correspondence, minutes, printed material, financial records, artifacts, textiles, photographs, and sound and audiovisual recordings.

Roberta Malavenda has worked as an educator, community consultant, social worker and community organizer advocating for child care and developmental disabilities rights. The Roberta Malavenda papers, 1978-1985, document her involvement in the National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC), Georgia Women's Political Caucus (GWPC), and National Anti-Klan Network.

The Sisters of No Mercy, feminist theater troupe, performed for more than three years in the early 1980s. Scripts, newsletters, newspaper clippings, research materials and photographs make up the records of the Sisters of No Mercy's performances at activist and feminist events in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Susan May established the Council on Battered Women, and, as President of the Board and then Director, she nurtured a small task force to become a broadly-based community organization and built a comprehensive program of crisis line, shelter, children's program, and educational services. Her papers, 1979-circa 1985, include printed material, correspondence, and an original manuscript by a Council on Battered Women staff member.
