Historical Note
A number of significant labor unions for railroad workers were formed in the late nineteenth century. They later represented other workers in the transportation industry. Railroad workers federated across trade lines to form groups (system federations) that bargained with their employer, the railroad system.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, founded in 1863, was an independent entity until joining the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in 2004. The Brotherhood of Railway Clerks was created in 1899. Its successor is the Transportation Communications International Union. The Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America was an American Federation of Labor affiliate made up of transit workers. It took the name Amalgamated Transit Union in 1964.
