Scope and Content of the Records
The records, 1976-2004, of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), Local 455, consist of correspondence, financial records, minutes, grievances, contracts, pamphlets, and periodicals. Most of the material deals with the negotiation of the union contract with Savannah Electric in 1999 and 2003. Also of interest are documents relating to the Canadian OPEIU and its relations with the American membership.

Historical Note about the Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 455 (Savannah, Georgia)
The Office Employees International Union (OEIU) was chartered in 1945 by the American Federation of Labor to represent stenographers, typists, bookkeepers and assistants. In 1965, the union changed its name to the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU). OPEIU Local 455, located in Savannah, Georgia, was composed of clerical and technical workers from Savannah Electric and Power Company. The Local was closed in the mid-2000s.

The Office and Professional Employees International Union was formed in 1945 as the Office Employees International Union. The membership of OPEIU Local 455, located in Savannah, Georgia, is comprised of clerical workers and technicians who were employed by Savannah Electric and Power Company. The records of Local 455 (1976-2004) consist of correspondence, financial records, minutes, grievances, and monthly reports.
