 Collection
Identifier: L2000-05

Scope and Content of the Collection

The collection consists of materials that primarily relate to conventions, publication, photographs and audio material, office files, and artifacts of the WIA. Most materials came from WIA 1 to ITU Local 48. Convention items include reports, transcript, proceedings, membership rolls, budget information, and awards for scrapbooks and reports. Convention files begin in 1954 and span up to the last convention of the WIA before it disbanded in 1990. Convention proceedings books cover the time period of 1911-1965 and 1973. Publications in the collection consist of Label Facts, the newsletter of the WIA; the ITU Review, the CWA News (of the Communication Workers of America), and a few other miscellaneous booklets, journals, and newspapers. The office files include financial statements (1940s-1970s), correspondence, minutes, membership lists, and other papers relating to the day-to-day activities of the Auxiliary.

The photographs in the collection are pulled from the convention papers and a scrapbook. The audio reels are from conventions, 1977-1983. The collection's artifacts include United States and Canadian flags, a union label exhibit banner, a scrapbook, several booklets (constitutions, bylaws, directories, etc.), charters (originals, photocopies, photographed copies), and old labor newspapers from the 1950s and earlier.

History of the Women's International Auxiliary to the International Typographical Union

The Women's International Auxiliary to the International Typographical Union (AFL-CIO) was founded in 1902 at the "Golden Jubilee" convention of the ITU. The main functions performed by the WIA were raising awareness about union products and about the union label, fund raising projects (i.e., to help out the Printer's Retirement Home), assisting ITU locals, and aiding members and their families in times of need. The WIA to the ITU disbanded in 1990, three years after the ITU became a part of the Communication Workers of America.
