Historical Note about the International Typographical Union

The International Typographical Union was founded on May 3, 1852 in the United States as the National Typographical Union, and in 1869, changed its name to the International Typographical Union. After a 1986 merger vote and later, a 1988 jurisdictional agreement, the International Typographical Union divided between the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and the Communication Workers of America. At the time of its dissolution in 1986, the International Typographical Union was the oldest surviving trade union in the United States.
