Historical Note about the United Leather Workers International Union
The American Federation of Labor first chartered a national union in the leather industry, the National Association of Saddle and Harness Makers of America, on August 12, 1889. Thereafter, others, including the United Leather Workers International Union were chartered, but most of these organizations were essentially local unions. The first permanent organization in the industry did not emerge until July 24, 1917, when the Travelers's Goods and Leather Novelty Workers International Union of America and the United Leather Workers on Horse Goods merged to create the United Leather Workers International Union. This union declined in the decade after World War I, and in 1937, merged with the Fur Makers to form the International Fur and Leather Workers Union, finally joining under the Amalgamated Meat Cutters in 1957.
