Atlanta Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union, Local 527 (Atlanta, Ga.) records

 Collection
Identifier: L1977-22

Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1954-1972, of Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union Local 527 consist of correspondence, minutes, financial records, contract negotiation files, contracts, constitutions, and other printed items. The negotiation files comprise four-fifths of the Records and are arranged by company. They contain correspondence, National Labor Relations Board case documents, reports, summaries of meetings between union and management negotiation teams, and assorted evidential material. Over half of the negotiation files describe Local 527's rocky relations with the Mead Paper Company. The general correspondence is primarily with other branches of the IPPAU, all levels of the AFL-CIO, and with members of Local 527.

Materials related to a petition before the Superior Court of Fulton County (Georgia) include correspondence, position statements, arbitration findings, and leaflets concerning a wildcat strike by some employees of Atlanta's Mead Packaging Company. Printing Specialties Local 527 (the bargaining agent for the company's production workers), the Community Relations Commission (CRC) and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) became involved in this dispute.
