Scope and Content of the Records

The Records, 1966, of the Atlanta Fire Fighters Union, Independent (AFFUI), contain correspondence, minutes, grievance and arbitration case material, legal documents, membership data, newspaper clippings, and some printed items (received as accession L1977-11). The bulk of the correspondence is between the AFFUI and other state and local fire fighter organizations.

The records also include signed resignation forms from the Atlanta Fire Department and the International Association of Fire Fighters, as well as one piece of correspondence, two certificates, a petition, and four undated audio tapes of meetings (received as accession L1979-08). The letter is from the Archbishop of Atlanta, Paul Hallinan, to Mayor Ivan Allen, Superior Court Judge Sam McKenzie, and Fire Department Head J. I. Martin, and presents a proposal for a compromise solution to the dispute.

History of the Atlanta Fire Fighters Union, Independent

Atlanta Fire Fighters Union, Independent was formed in 1966 by fire fighters disaffiliating from Local 134 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) because of the IAFF's refusal to support them in a strike against the Atlanta Fire Department. Many Local 134 members resigned from both the Atlanta Fire Department and the IAFF.

Abstract:

Atlanta Fire Fighters Union, Independent was formed in 1966 by fire fighters disaffiliating from Local 134 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) because of the IAFF's refusal to support them in a strike against the Atlanta Fire Department. Its records, 1966, contain signed resignation forms, correspondence, minutes, grievance and arbitration case material, legal documents, membership data, newspaper clippings, and some printed items.

Acquisition Information

Acquired in two accessions. Mrs. Robert J. Caum donated correspondence, minutes, legal documents, membership data, and printed material in 1977 (accession L1977-11). Robert J. Caum donated signed resignation forms and other documents on March 27, 1979 (accession L1979-08).
