Historical Note

Members of the printing trades formed craft unions starting in the late nineteenth century, which combined starting in the 1960s. The Graphic Communications International Union formed in 1983 with the merger of the Graphic Arts International Union (GAIU) and the International Printing and Graphic Communications Union (IPGCU). GAIU had formed in 1972 with the merger of International Brotherhood of Bookbinders and the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union (created in 1964 by the merger between the Amalgamated Lithographers of America and the International Photoengravers Union). IPGCU had been created by the 1973 merger of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union with the International Stereotypers and Electrotypers Union. In 2005, the Graphic Communications International Union merged with the Teamsters to form The Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (GCC/IBT).
