Scope and Contents of the Records
The records, circa 1960s-1970s, of Atlanta Printing Specialities and Paper Products Union, Local 527 (Atlanta, Ga,) consist of correspondence, minutes, financial records, contract negotiation files, contracts, constitutions, and other printed items. Ralph Meers, longtime president of the local, created some of the files. The negotiation files comprise a majority of the records and are arranged by company. They contain correspondence, reports, summaries of meetings between union and management negotiation teams, and assorted evidential material. Many of the files deal with a few companies, including Mead Packaging Company, Owens-Illinois, St. Regis, Georgia Blueprint, Continental Can and Atlanta Machine Works.

Historical Note about the Atlanta Printing Specialities and Paper Products Union, Local 527
Atlanta Printing Specialties and Paper Products Union, Local 527, has a proud history dating back to 1946 when it was chartered by 17 women. Originally the local was a unit of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union of North America (IPPAU), and affiliated with two subordinate bodies of IPPAU, the Southern Conference of Specialty Workers and the Southeastern Printing Specialties and Paper Products union District Council No. S-7. In 1973, the IPPAU merged with the International Stereotypers', Electrotypers', and Platemakers' Union of North America to create the International Printing and Graphic Communications Union (IPGCU). Later, the IPGCU merged into the Graphic Communications International Union.
