Scope and Contents of the Records

International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, Southeast Regional Office records, circa 1950s-1970s, contain assorted correspondence, collective bargaining contracts, contract and strike negotiations, agreements, National Labor Relations Board materials, and strike materials. Much of the material (bulk 1972-1974) relates to a strike against Marlene Industries in Westmoreland, Tennessee. Also represented are audio tapes, video tapes, photography, and plaques.

Historical Note

Founded in 1900, the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) was one of the largest and most important unions during the height of the American labor movement. The Southeast Region office opened in 1937. In 1995, the ILGWU merged with Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union to form the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE), which after a subsequent merger became UNITE HERE.

The Southeast Region office of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union opened in 1937. Its records, circa 1950s-1970s, contain correspondence, collective bargaining contracts, contract and strike negotiations, agreements, National Labor Relations Board materials, and strike materials. The bulk of the material relates to a strike against Marlene Industries in Westmoreland, Tennessee.
