History of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 728
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Local 728 (Atlanta, Ga.) was founded in the 1930s to represent freight haulers, and later organized warehouses, dairies, and the car hauling industry. It was the second Teamsters local established in Georgia. During the 1950s and 1960s the local's membership grew almost tenfold. In 1965, the local was divided to ease administrative burdens. Local 728 maintained its jurisdiction over freight hauling and delivery drivers in the cities of Atlanta and Savannah. Local 528's jurisdiction extended to the rest of Georgia and included car hauling. For a brief time, Local 928 (Atlanta, Ga.) also existed, created to represent package and delivery drivers (surface and air) in the state of Georgia, and General Crafts in Savannah (Ga.) and Brunswick (Ga.). Jimi Richards has been a member of The International Brotherhood of Teamsters for over 24 years. A native Georgian, he is a former Road Steward for Yellow Freight and has worked as an Organizer and Business Agent for Local 728. Mr. Richards also served as the Secretary Treasurer and Manager of Local 728, Atlanta Ga.
