Scope and Content of the Records
The records of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) Memphis-Jackson Joint Board (1946-1991, bulk 1960-1987) contain correspondence, grievances, financial records and audits, organizing materials, periodicals, newsletters, leaflets, photographs, membership lists, convention materials, constitutions, and by-laws.
The bulk of the records reflect the operations of the ACTWU Local 281, which served workers at the Bemis Cotton Mill in Bemis, Tennessee. The Memphis-Jackson Joint Board served as administrative support for a number of other locals in the same geographic area including Local 848 (Dallas, Texas; Hollander Home Fashions), Local 606 (Memphis, Tennessee; Bemis Bag Company), Local 1905 (Memphis, Tennessee; Munsingwear), Local 1919 (Houston, Texas; General Electric), Local 748 (Houston, Texas; Bemis Company), Local 1798 (DeQuincy, Louisiana; Alton Box Board Company), Local 281 (Bemis, Tennessee; Bemis Cotton Mill), and Local 948 (New Orleans, Louisiana; Columbian Rope Company).
