The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 480 of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, also known as the Atomic Local 480, was chartered in 1946. The community of Oak Ridge was developed in 1942 and managed by the Army of the United States to facilitate production of the Atomic bomb for the Manhattan Project during World War II. John Gates Ramsay, born 1902, was a steelworker early in his career, serving as a vice-president and president of local unions. He joined the new Steel Workers Organizing Committee of the CIO in 1936. From 1940 he was a member of the organizing staff of the USWA, serving in their Southern organizing drive in 1946-1953.
