Historical Note about American Meat Workers' Unions
Originally formed in 1897 under the auspices of the American Federation of Labor, the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America (AMCBW) represented butchers and others in the meatpacking industry. The Meat, Food, and Allied Workers Union, Local 525 (Asheville, North Carolina) was affiliated with the AMCBW. In 1937, the Congress of Industrial Organizations chartered the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA). The AMCBW and UPWA coordinated from 1953, and in 1968 the UPWA merged into the AMCBW.
In 1979, the AMCBW merged with the Retail Clerks International Union in 1979 to form the United Food and Commercial Workers. See the UFCW Website for more information.

Abstract:
The collection consists of 40 agreements, 1951-1976, between various local unions of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America or the United Packinghouse Workers of America and retail, manufacturing, or other entities.
Arrangement
The collective bargaining agreements described in this finding aid are separated from multiple manuscript collections and consolidated for ease of use. The contracts are split into two series representing two distinct unions: the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen and the United Packing House, Food, and Allied Workers.
