Scope and Content of the Records
Records of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local Lodge 721 (Durham, N.C.) contain mainly legal documents, 1942-1990. They include items such as Local 721's bylaws from 1952, an agreement with Wright's Automatic Tobacco Packing Machine Company, and several booklet versions of the local's contracts with Wright's Automatic Machinery Company,1942-1968. The remainder of the records include arbitration hearing pleadings and opinions from various employee negotiations between the IAM Local 721 and IAM Local 2358 and various divisions of Wright’s Machinery or Sperry Corporation, 1953-1990. One additional legal document of interest is a 1968 pleading from a U.S. Labor Relations Board Decision and Election for a dispute between Wright Machinery Company, the Professional Employees International Union Local 84, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

Historical Note
Originally founded in Atlanta in 1888 as a trade union for railroad machinists, today the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents workers in a large and diverse number of fields. Over the course of the 20th century the machinists moved from representing railroad workers to machinists and others working for airlines and the aerospace industry. IAM Local Lodge 721 was located in Durham, N.C.
