Scope and Content of the Papers

The papers of Tom Backus, 1966-1981, contain both personal and professional information regarding his affiliation with the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local 72, and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry. The papers include a negotiated contract between the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 72 and management. It also includes certificates from his many civic and union-affiliated associations; a roll call directory of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada issued March 1970 and containing names of all union members; four pamphlets describing the benefit packages for Local 72; and a program from the 1978 services award banquet of the local.

Biographical Note about Tom Backus

Thomas H. Backus (1910-1985) worked as a pipefitter and was active in organized labor starting in the 1930s. He retired to Buchanan, Georgia.
