Scope and Content of the Records
The records, 1919-1979, of International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers (HFIA), Local 48 (Atlanta, GA) comprise primarily correspondence and financial documents. The chief correspondent is H.M. Hoffman, Business Agent and Financial Secretary, who communicated with employers concerning all issues subject to collective bargaining agreements. Correspondence with International Secretary-Treasurer and President C.W. Sickles concerns joint trade agreements, the chartering of new locals in the South, and jurisdictional disputes with the Plumbers and Steamfitters in 1940 and 1948, and with HFIA Locals(Mobile) and 67 (Tampa) in 1937 and 1947, respectively. The Records show that Local 48 sought wage scales, jobs, and the prevention of legislation unfavorable to labor by participating in the States Conference of Asbestos Workers.
