History of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills
Jacob Elsas was cofounder of the successful manufacturing company Elsas, May, and Company, which made cloth and paper bags in Atlanta, Georgia from 1872. Following the dissolution of that partnership, Elsas incorporated The Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill in 1889, occupying an Elsas, May mill built east of the city in 1882. As the new company grew, mills were added to the site in 1895 and 1907, and the neighboring village for millworkers, Cabbagetown, also increased in size. Eventually the company added seven more mills across the United States. By 1960, the parent company was known as Fulton Industries Inc. However, the Atlanta mill remained known as the Fulton Cotton Mill and continued in operation under the management of Elsas family members until 1968, when Fulton Industries Inc. was sold. The Atlanta mill closed in 1978.
