Scope and Content of the Records
The papers, 1920-1979 (bulk 1959-1979) of J.W. Giles comprise correspondence, legal documents, financial statements, minutes, printed material, films, photographs, and artifacts. The bulk of the materials relate to Giles's work with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 84 in Atlanta, 1959-1972, and as Secretary of the Georgia State AFL-CIO, 1968-1970. Other series pertain to his work as Chairman, Atlanta Labor Council Organizing Committee, 1957-1958; Secretary-Treasurer, Georgia Electrical Workers Association, 1963-1965; Director, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council No.14, 1967-1968; and as Liaison Officer, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 1972-1978. The Collection also contains smaller series of papers pertaining to the Georgia Federation of Labor, the Atlanta Building Trades Council, and to IBEW Local 84 from the 1920s to the 1940s.

James William Giles, labor leader, served as an official of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 84 and as Secretary, Georgia State AFL-CIO. The collection consists of papers of J.W. Giles from 1920-1978. Includes correspondence, financial statements, legal documents, minutes, motion pictures, and printed materials. The bulk of the records relate to Giles' work with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 84 (1920-1972) and the Georgia State AFL-CIO (1968-1970).
