Scope and Content of the Records

The collection consists of records of the AFL-CIO Council of Jacksonville (Jacksonville, Fla.) and its predecessor, the Jacksonville Central Labor Council, from 1956-1973. Includes correspondence, financial documents, minutes of the Jacksonville Central Labor Union and Council of Leadership for Community Advancement, general office files, and printed materials. The records document the Council's interest in the consolidated government of Jacksonville-Duval County, winning collective bargaining rights for public employees, community service programs, state legislation, voter registration and education, increasing the number of locals affiliated with the Council, and supporting candidates for public office at the local, state, and national levels.

Abstract:

Originally organized as the Jacksonville (Florida) Central Labor Council, the Council changed its name to the AFL-CIO Council of Jacksonville around 1970. The collection consists of records of the AFL-CIO Council of Jacksonville and its predecessor, the Jacksonville Central Labor Council, from 1956-1973, and includes correspondence, financial documents, minutes of the Jacksonville Central Labor Union and Council of Leadership for Community Advancement, general office files, and printed materials. The records illuminate the AFL-CIO Council of Jacksonville's interest in the consolidated government of Jacksonville-Duval County.
