Scope and Content of the Records

Records of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), District Council 77 (Decatur, Ga.) consist primarily of bound minute books from locals affiliated with IUPAT and its predecessors in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, 1905-2014. Extensive sets of minutes include those from Local Number 57 (Birmingham, Ala.), 1907-2014; Local Number 151 (Anniston, Ala.), 1948-1984; Local Number 432 (Montgomery, Ala.), 1946-1988; and Local Number 193 (Atlanta, Ga.), 1957-2001. Other locals represented in the records include Number 271 (Jasper, Ala.), 367 (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), 651 (Gadsden, Ala.), Atlanta Glaziers Local 140 (Atlanta, Ga.), and 437 (Niota, Tenn.). Along with the minutes are scattered membership ledgers, dues books, out of work lists, class records, and treasurers' ledgers. Some photographs, membership cards, and correspondence has been separated from the volumes.

Biographical / Historical

The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) was known as the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades until 1999. The IUPAT began in 1887 as the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America. The union is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and represents a wide range of trades. Formed in 2004, District Council 77 serves 11 locals in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
