Historical Note about the President’s Commission on the Health Needs of the Nation
The President's Commission on the Health Needs of the Nation was established by President Harry S. Truman in December 1951. Chaired by Dr. Paul B. Magnuson of the Northwestern University Medical School, the Commission studied the health resources on the United States and the present and future needs of its population. In addition to hearings on a wide array of medical topics, the commission held regional hearings throughout the country. Commission members were primarily from the medical and educational communities, but included representation from agricultural, consumer, and labor groups. President Albert J. Hayes of the International Association of Machinists (AFL) was a member, as was Walter Reuther of the United Automobile Workers (CIO). The commission’s final report, "Building America's Health" (widely called the "Magnuson Report") was submitted at the end of 1952, shortly before the end of Truman's term.
