Historical Note
The film Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton portrays the life, work, and influence of the poet and filmmaker. Broughton (1913-1999) was an important precursor to the San Francisco Beat Scene, an active member of the Radical Faeries and Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and an influential avant garde filmmaker. Freelance writer, communications consultant, facilitator and futurist Stephen Silha served as Big Joy's project director. He also co-directed and produced the film, released to coincide with the centennial anniversary of Broughton's birth in November 2013. At that time, in collaboration with the Atlanta Queer Literary Festival, Georgia State University hosted a performance of Broughton's works, including songs composed by Ludar (Ludar Ricardo Felenstein, 1952-95), a Los Angeles-based performer who had collaborated with Broughton to set the latter's poems to music.
