Historical Note about the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers

Originally founded in Atlanta in 1888 as a trade union for railroad machinists, today the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents workers in a large and diverse number of fields. Over the course of the 20th century the machinists moved from representing railroad workers to machinists and others working for airlines and the aerospace industry.

Biographical Note about Robert Miller Grant

Robert Miller Grant (1887-1971) was a master machinist for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad locomotive shop in Huntington, West Virginia. He was originally from Catlettsburg, Kentucky, where his father owned a machine shop. Grant joined the International Association of Machinists Lodge 104 in Huntington in 1918.
