Historical Note

Originally founded in Atlanta in 1888 as a trade union for railroad machinists, today the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) represents workers in a large and diverse number of fields. Over the course of the 20th century the machinists moved from representing railroad workers to machinists and others working for airlines and the aerospace industry.

South Charleston, West Virginia, called itself the the "chemical center of the world" because of its industrial concentration. The earliest effort to organize the workforce at the Union Carbide plant there occurred in 1933. The IAM finally successfully organized South Charleston's Union Carbide workers in 1965, as IAM Local Lodge 598.
