Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Art Shostak PATCO Collection, 1979-2005, consists of material from his research and relationship with PATCO: emails with PATCO members, NATCA members, and PATCO LIVES stalwarts, copies of mass media coverage of the strike and its aftermath. The collection also contains copies of unpublished articles and talk guidelines about aspects of the matter, as well as a PATCO reunion t-shirt.

Biography of Arthur Shostak

Arthur B. Shostak (1937-) is an American sociologist and futurist, and former professor of sociology at Drexel University. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937, Shostak received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University in 1958, and in 1961 received his Ph.D. in Industrial Sociology at Princeton University. Until 1967 he taught at Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania. He became professor of sociology at Drexel where he taught courses on the effects of technology, industrial and urban sociology, and race and ethnic relations. In 1975 he began serving as an adjunct sociologist with the National Labor College and AFL-CIO George Meany Center for Labor Studies until 2000.

The Air Controllers' Controversy-Lessons from the Patco Strike (New York: Human Services Press, 1986), is recognized as a major work in the area of labor relations.
