Scope and Content of the Collection

This collection consists of a copy of the script, three programs, and a review of this production from the Los Angeles Times of December 10, 1997. The script, which was written by Susan Clines and Michael Feinstein, includes biographical anecdotes, stories about Mercer and his collaborators, and discussions of Mercer's unique abilities as a lyricist. In addition to a list of the songs performed, the program provides a short biography of Mercer with photographs, and biographical sketches of each of the performers. The review by Don Heckman mentions particularly the fine performances of "I Thought About You," "Spring, Spring, Spring," "Midnight Sun," and "Moon River."

Production Note

Come Rain or Come Shine: The Song of Johnny Mercer was a show produced by the Center Theatre Group at the Mark Taper Forum of the Los Angeles Music Center on December 8, 1997. Directed by Gordon Hunt and produced by Susan Clines, the production featured more than twenty well-known performers, including Alan Bergman, Michael Feinstein, John Pizzarelli, and Margaret Whiting. The show highlighted the works of the lyricist Johnny Mercer with performances of almost forty of his best-known songs.
