Biographical Note on Steve Allen

Born in New York City on December 26, 1921, Steve Allen spent his early years traveling across the United States with his mother, the vaudeville comedienne Belle Montrose. He became a well-known author, pianist, comedian, and actor in his adult years. After working with CBS for four years, he became host of the NBC-TV Tonight Show, which became the model for late-night television shows, and later The Steve Allen Show. Steve Allen died in 2000.

A prolific, Grammy-winning composer, Allen was an admirer of Johnny Mercer's lyrics. After Mercer's death, his widow Ginger Mercer and Bill Harbach encouraged Mr. Allen to write a song to a title Mercer had created, "Your Wife Is the Love of My Life."
