Scope and Contents of the Collection
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local Lodge History Project Collection contains correspondence, training manuals, and completed projects and provides insight into the creation and planning of the Local Lodge History Project workshop and the work and training of the attendees. The collection covers multiple, but not consecutive, years of the workshop from 2001-2011. Collection created by Rachel Bernstein, Charlie Micallef, and Dorothy Fennell for the Local Lodge History Project.

History of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge Histoy Project
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Local Lodge History Project conference was created in 2001 to train International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers retirees how to research their local lodge’s history and produce a history project to document their findings. The week long program also trains IAM retirees in preservation techniques for these materials. Traditionally, the workshop is led by archivists and historians from the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, New York University, and the Southern Labor Archives at Georgia State University. The program is held at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center at Placid Harbor in Maryland.
Historical Note about International Association of Machinists
Originally founded in Atlanta in 1888 as a trade union for railroad machinists, today the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers represents workers in a large and diverse number of fields. Over the course of the 20th century the machinists moved from representing railroad workers to machinists and others working for airlines and the aerospace industry.
