Historical Note

History of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, District Lodge 143:

  1. Formed in 1888 to organize railroad engineers, the International Association of Machinists expanded during the twentieth century to represent industrial workers in many fields. The union changed its name to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in 1964, following its expansion into the aerospace, air travel, and air freight industries. Members belong to Local Lodges, which in turn are organized into larger Districts. Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, District Lodge 143 represented union employees that worked for Northwest Airlines, also headquartered near St. Paul. The district's membership was primarily in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. Over time, District Lodge 143 expanded its membership to include not just mechanics but also other types of airline employees including kitchen staff and desk clerks. In 2008, Delta Airlines acquired Northwest. The employees of the combined company voted against union representation in 2010, and District Lodge 143 closed.

History of Northwest Airlines:

  1. Northwest Airlines Corporation (often abbreviated NWA) was a major United States airline founded in 1926 and absorbed into Delta Air Lines in a merger on October 29, 2008. Northwest was headquartered in Eagan, Minnesota near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Northwest also established major hubs at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Memphis International Airport. Northwest was a pioneer in transpacific flights to Japan and Asia via Alaska, and had a partnership with the Dutch airline KLM.
