Abstract:

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has represented the interests of machinists, engineers, and aerospace workers since the late 19th century. Included within this collection from the IAM's central office are letters to the executive board, union decisions, correspondence, video cassettes, photography, and film reels, circa 1930s-1990s.

Historical Note

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers traces its origins to a group of railroad machinists that formed in 1888. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, the union allowed new groups of workers into its ranks, including unskilled railroad machinists, airline and aerospace workers, airline workers, becoming one of the largest industrial unions in North America.
