Historical Note

Leonard Ray Teel worked for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, CNN, the Washington Evening Star, and the Miami Herald. In the late 1980s he switched from daily journalism to teaching journalism at Georgia State University, where he had earned a Ph.D. in British history. A professor of communication, Teel was the founding director of the Center for International Media Education. His books include a biography of Atlanta Constitution editor Ralph McGill and, with Ron Taylor, Into the Newsroom: An Introduction to Journalism, which has been translated into Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish.

Erma: A Black Women Remembers, 1912-1980 by Erma Calderon with Teel, was his first book (Random House, 1981). Erma Calderon was "a self-taught Southern black woman who struggled from the age of nine years to manage her own life," and Teel helped her put her story into autobiography form. The book was edited at Random House by the novelist and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison.
