Scope and Content of Series X: Arbitration and Grievances

From the Series:

The Arbitration and Grievances series (1969-1982) contains PATCO’s internal files relating to cases that worked their way through the arbitration and grievance process.

Individual case files are labeled using an alphanumeric system that includes information about the case. For example: AEA-81-156-ZDC. The first three letters represent the PATCO region from which the case occurred, in this example Eastern United States. PATCO divided itself into the following geographical regions: Eastern (AEA), Southern, Central, Southwest, Pacific, and Great Lakes (AGL). The second set of numbers indicates the year the grievance took place, in this case 1981. The third three digit number represents the case number, while the fourth three letters refer to the individual local where the grievance occurred, in this case Washington DC. The vast majority of these files were created between 1978 and 1981.

In addition to the individual case files, this series also includes correspondence files related to PATCO's arbitration process. The issues under dispute vary but a significant number deal with the watch schedule. These grievance files track the back and forth between labor and management on the scheduling issue and form the central core of this series. In addition to the watch schedule, the arbitration and grievances document discrepancies between PATCO and the FAA regarding dress codes, work place discipline, parking, promotion, training, crew assignments, and work duties.
