Scope and Content of the Series

From the Series:

Series III reflects Via's wide-ranging interests and activities during his career in labor education. Noteworthy files in this series (which is arranged alphabetically) are: "American Federation of Teachers [AFT] Local No. 189," 1953-1975; "Atlanta Labor Education Association," 1951-1954; "Commission on the Future of the South," 1969- 1974; "Hate Groups, 1955-1958"; labor education generally and in the South; "National Association of Human Rights Workers," 1972-1974; "Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA]," 1977-1978; and "Textile Employment and Advancement for Minorities" [TEAM], 1965-1969.

Since race relations and employment opportunities for minorities were constant concerns for Via, his Papers include numerous files related to African-American participation in unions, and to other civil rights subject areas. In Series 1, such files include Via's annotated copy of Martin Luther King's, "Our Struggle - The Struggle of Montgomery," [1956], and "Urban Problems Course with Demographic Change and Racial Ghettos: The Crisis of American Cities by Herbert Hill, 1966." In Series 2, these files include "Committee of Black Employees, 1969," concerning internal SRC issues; and Vernon Jordan's "Civil Rights in Georgia," September 1969. Reports in Series 2 on school desegregation [1960-1961], and "Memphis - More than a Garbage Strike, 1968" offer more material in this area.

In Series 3, as well, several folders relate to trade unions and African-Americans, as well as to civil rights more generally, including "African-American Workers and Organized Labor - Racism Within Organized Labor [pamphlets and reports], 1957-1965"; Freeman's doctoral dissertation, "An Examination of Blacks in Union Leadership Positions in the United States [1983]"; Samuel Lubell's, "Five Fingers Make a Fist" [1957] with Margaret Price's, "Negro Voter in the South" [1957]; "NAACP and ILGWU, 1962"; "Negro Labor Unions - Virginia, c. 1965"; files related to race relations; and the 1957 "Survey of Southern Trade Unions and the Race Problem," conducted by the Jewish Labor Committee.
