Scope and Contents of the Series

Series I, United Mine Workers of America, 1941-1970, is the largest series and is the product of the longest affiliation of Adkins' career. It is organized in four subseries: A. Executive Director's Files, 1941-1970; B. Collective Bargaining, 1941-1970; C. Arbitration and Grievances, 1951-1952, 1961-1970; D. Artifacts and oversize documents.

Executive Files include bylaws and constitutions, correspondence, interoffice communication, a calendar for 1965-1966, photographs, and a biographical account of his time in the UMWA. Collective Bargaining documents consist mainly of UMWA contracts ranging from 1945-1969. It also includes contracts for other unions and collective bargaining correspondence, 1957-1968. Arbitration and Grievances includes files on arbitration and grievance cases from 1951-1970. Companies include Snap Creek Coal Company (1951), Paramount Metal Products Company (1961), Ravon Hinton (1965), Bonnell, Inc. (1967-1970), and the Crate and Basket Company (1967). Other items in this series include an oversized commemorative list of UMWA Local 6112 members that fought in World War II, Adkins' personal mining artifacts (helmet, lunch pail, light), union buttons, and badges.
