Scope and Content of the Series

From the Series:

The Political Activities series contains material that documents Mary Long's involvement with political candidates, elections, and organizations; her writing for nurses on political involvement; and political appointments she received. The series primarily contains printed material and correspondence, including manuscripts, correspondence, and legal documents related to Mary Long's published book chapter, co-authored with Diana J. Mason, "State Governments" (in Mason and Susan W. Talbott, eds., Political Action Handbook for Nurses, 1985, revised as Policy and Politics for Nurses). Other files document local, state, national, and non-Georgia political campaigns with which Long was involved or followed, 1976-1998, and the National Conventions of the Democratic Party in 1988 and 1992. Ephemera and correspondence reflect Long's service as a volunteer at the 1988 convention (held in Atlanta) and as a delegate at the 1992 convention (in New York City).

Appointed positions Long held that are documented in this series include member, Civilian Review Board, City of Atlanta Police Department; consumer member, Georgia State Board of Examination, Qualification and Registration of Architects; member, Judicial Nominating Commission for the State of Georgia; and member of the Advisory Boards of Georgia Department of Community Health's Office of Minority Health and Office of Women's Health. Files related to her service on the City of Atlanta's Task Force on the Homeless are part of Series II. See Series IX for Long's political artifacts.
