Scope and Content of the Series

From the Series:

The broad range of Mary Long's activities, in Atlanta and elsewhere, as an educator, activist, and advocate is apparent in this series. Correspondence and printed material document her involvement with professional, community, philanthropic, religious, and educational institutions (arranged by the organization's name). Where known, Long's title is included in parentheses if she served in an official capacity with a group. In some instances, the series documents close ties between Long and a group or organization, such as several files related to Long's longtime membership in the nursing sorority Chi Eta Phi. In other instances, files document a one-time event and her involvement as an instructor, speaker, panelist, moderator, or discussant; or, less often, as an attendee. Many of the files in the series, denoted "presenter" in parentheses, contain correspondence, forms, programs and agendas, or promotional materials related to such appearances. In some instances, labeled "includes presentation," the files contains the texts of presentations Long gave. Written presentations by Long for which no audience or venue is known are filed as "presentations, unidentified."

Where possible, Series II-V contain the presentations Long made speaking as an employee of Grady Hospital or the Arthritis Foundation, or as an officer of the GNA, ANA, or GNF. See those series for further speech materials. See Series IX for artifacts related to this series.
