Scope and Content of the Series

From the Series:

This series bulks with material from the late 1970s through the 1980s, and offers researchers a significant view into both the state of workers and management during that time, directly through the eyes of W. J. Usery. Usery's thinking and insights into human interaction are directly evidenced in this series' speeches. Delivered to companies' management staffs, professional organizations in the arbitration, mediation and industrial relations fields, plus union gatherings, Usery delivered a consistent message of the mechanisms of labor management cooperation and its changing face.

The speeches are arranged in chronological order so that the researcher can match dates with current events, frequently mid- or post- Usery's labor conflict involvement. The speech files are a common entity in a public figure's office filing system, and these have been left in their original order. A few folders with conference titles relate to Usery's appearances at those functions. Additionally, dated finding aid and folder information includes the target audience's organization, location of the event, plus each folder has a copy of the speech actually used by Usery during his presentations. Usery traveled throughout the United States, but his ties to Georgia are evident as he spoke at W. J. Usery, Jr. Day in Milledgeville, Law Day at Mercer University in Macon, and the Macon Junior College Commencement services-all in June 1976.

Held throughout the country, Usery appeared frequently before Industrial Relations Research Association (IRRA), National Association of Manufacturers, individual industries, company, union, plus quality and productivity groups' functions. To inform the researcher of the subjects, several titles of talks are: Unionization in the Military, (US Air Force Academy, September 1977); An Approach to Productivity Bargaining (American Productivity Center and Business Week conference, October 1978); Labor and Management in 1979-Adversaries and Allies for a Stronger America (Atlanta IRRA, March 1979; Collective Bargaining: Beyond Adversity Toward Joint Leadership, (Philadelphia Area Labor-Management Committee, October 1987); and Labor Relations in the 1990s, (April 1990). Such titles evidence Usery's commitment to the collective bargaining process, an overarching need for labor-management cooperation in pursuit of enhanced productivity, and a recognition that change in the workplace is inevitable and can be managed.
