Scope and Content of the Papers
The Papers, 1975-1978, of Marc R. Levinson, consist of correspondence, newsclippings, official statements, depositions, and other documents related to three specific labor relations disputes: a strike by Local 1644 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) against the city of Atlanta, 1977; the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union's recognition campaign against the J.P. Stevens Company, 1976-1978; and an attempt by the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union to organize Cagle, Inc., a chicken procession plant in Camilla, Ga., 1976. Also included are two cassette tapes containing interviews done by Levinson of Jerry Wurf, President of AFSCME, and Albert Shanker, President of the American Federation of Teachers, in which the issues of public employee unionism, Atlanta labor relations, rivalry between the AFT and the National Education Association, school integration, standardized tests, and union political coalitions are raised.
