Scope and Content of the Series
Series I, Administrative Records, 1945-1977, relates to the activities and inner workings of the Atlanta office and is divided into five subseries.
When the ILGWU celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1950 (50th anniversary) the union noted "impressive achievements" (Justice, June 1980, p. 14) in areas such as "vacation funds, retirement funds, union health centers and mobile health units" (Ibid.). Series I materials reflect these continuing programs with specific information about the Southeast. With the Protocol of Peace of 1910, signed by union officers and the employers' association, a "Joint Board of Sanitary Control for the purpose of improving health conditions in the factories" (Berman, p. 181) became a vehicle for workplace improvement early in the ILGWU's history. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, following the Protocol so closely, cemented the commitment to worker health and workplace safety that is reflected so directly in this collection via the Mobile Health Center/Unit folders in Subseries 2: Subject Files, 1945-1977 and photographs. The ILGWU's "Chain of health clinics" (Schwartz, pps. 29 and 86) is a given in the Southeast.
