Scope and Content of the Records

The records, 1897-1972, of the International Typographical Union, Local 104 (Birmingham, Ala.), comprise correspondence, grievances, minutes, financial documents, membership data, testimony, and printed materials such as newspaper clippings, handbills, newsletters, constitutions, contracts, pamphlets, and proceedings. Most of the correspondence is between Local 104 and the International Typographical Union on such topics as union administration, union standards on wages and working conditions, contract negotiations, and pensions.

Most of the correspondence is between Local 104 and officers of the International Typographical Union: Presidents Elmer Brown, 1965-1967 and John J. Pilch, 1968-1972; and Secretary-Treasurer William R. Cloud, 1964-1972.

The most frequently discussed subjects are union administration, maintenance of union standards in wages and working conditions, contract negotiations, and pensions. Contract negotiations of the several branches (or chapels) of Local 104 are discussed in a correspondence subseries. Documents prepared for hearings of the National Labor Relations Board and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission pertain to negotiation settlements and charges of discrimination.

Accession L1978-31: The International Typographical Union, Local 104 (Birmingham, Ala.), records comprise the minutes of meetings, 1897-1950. The bulk of the material discusses routine buiness, including minutes from special meetings, official ballots, and financial records. Highlights of the 1946 International Typographical Union Convention, the proposition of the 8-hour day, 1904-1905, and the condemnation of the use of prisoners in competitive jobs in Alabama, 1932, are recorded. Cases concerning job scale and job contract brought before the War Labor Board by President W. E. Dennis, 1942-1945, are reported.
